What is pubic hair?

Pubic hair, otherwise known as bush or muff, is hair that grows on the genital area of the human body. The hair starts growing when one enters their adolescent years, a stage that involves an increase in the production of hormones in the body. The growth of pubic hair is a response to this activity by the body. Pubic hair is naturally coarse, curly and thick in texture.

On men, pubic hair grows on the area right above the shaft of the penis, on the scrotum, near the thighs and in between the butt cheeks. On ladies, pubic hair grows on the the area right below the stomach, the vulva, the vaginal opening and near the thighs.

Apparently, this strange phenomenon of the human body serves a purpose.

Why does pubic hair grow?

Pubic hair grows as a protective barrier between your genitalia and the “outside world”. Interesting? Definitely! The growth of pubic hair protects your genitalia from harmful bacteria that threaten its wellness. Science has also shown that the oils produced by pubic hair prevent any foreign bacteria from reproducing.

Pubic hair also protects your genitalia from friction. Friction tends to happen between the surface of your genitalia and the clothes you have worn during movement. It also happens during sexual activity. The skin of your genitalia tends to be very soft and delicate and therefore any harsh movements on it could lead to inflammation or worse, an infection.

Other than that, pubic hair is believed to trap pheromones during sexual activity. Pheromones are hormones that are produced by the human body and are able to influence the behaviour of your partner during sexual activity.

How to groom pubic hair

Pubic hair serves a purpose and therefore needs to be taken care of. There are two ways of doing this:

  • Allowing it to grow
  • Trimming or shaving it off

Allowing it to grow

Allowing your pubic hair to grow to its full length is the easiest and most natural way to go. Even so, one still has to observe certain hygiene practices to avoid any complications. Prevention is better than cure!

Some of the practices you can incorporate are:

  • Washing the hair daily. One can use warm water and unscented soap to keep it fresh and clean and avoid any pH imbalance.
  • Exfoliate once in a while. You can do this using a wash towel or loofah. Exfoliating helps in removing excess oils and dead skin cells that may accumulate there. This is especially common among women since their genitalia contains folded skin on the vulva.
  • Allow the area to breathe. Do not wear tight clothing. Pubic hair already has a barrier of air between the genitalia and the “outside world”. Sweat and any other moisture may accumulate and that is not friendly to your genitalia.
  • Once you wash it, dry off any present moisture to prevent growth of unwanted bacteria or fungus.
  • Every time you use the washroom, ensure to wipe from front to back. This protects you from any unwanted bacteria from the anus to your genitalia.

Trimming or shaving it off

If you prefer a smoother genital area, here are some tips that would help at home.

  • Wash your hands and equipment before working on your pubic hair. This gets rid of any harmful bacteria that would cause harm if they get into contact with your genitalia.
  • Wash your pubic hair and skin with warm water. This helps in getting rid of bacteria that would be transmitted while shaving or trimming off your pubic hair. It also helps in making the hair softer and the skin is friendlier when it is moist. Remember, pubic hair is coarse, curly and thick. Working on it while dry could have a similar effect as yanking off hair. Making the area moist also makes it easy for one to see on what direction their hair grows at.
  • Ensure you have a mirror that can help you see what you are doing on areas you can’t see.
  • Start shaving. As you shave, remember to shave towards the direction your hair is growing from. This prevents effects such as irritation or inflammation.
  • Once you are done, you can rinse off any short hairs that may have accumulated on the skin surface with warm water.
  • Pat the surface dry using a microfiber towel, just because they are smooth and friendly.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing for the first few days. Tight clothing may rub off on the skin during movement and this could lead to further irritation and inflammation.
  • On top of it all, avoid any sexual activity. Remember, the area is vulnerable as it has nothing protecting it from any friction that happens during sexual activity.
  • Lastly, ensure you clean the area on a daily basis. Use warm water as you clean.

Depending on your preference, the goal here is to ensure your pubic area is clean and free from unwanted pathogens. I hope today’s article has given you a bit of understanding on what to do.
